Pino Pascali's Shamanic Primitivism at Fondazione Carriero

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Fondazione Carriero in Milan, opened two years ago, presents 'Pascali sciamano', a solo exhibition of Pino Pascali (1935–1968) curated by Francesco Stocchi. The show explores Pascali's interest in primitivism, totemism, and animistic nature as a counterpoint to modern society. It juxtaposes Pascali's ironic, visceral works with 20th-century African tribal art—funerary sculptures, masks, coins, shields, and ritual vessels—displayed separately in accumulative cabinets of curiosities. On the ground floor, his shaped canvases evoke rocks, snakes, pelicans, swans, and bucrania. The first floor transforms into a forest-like environment with totemic objects, giant fungi, and silkworms. The top floor features a single work, 'Cinque bachi da seta e un bozzolo', exemplifying his rule-free play with forms and symbols. The exhibition runs at Fondazione Carriero, Milan, in 2017.
