Pino Pascali's Lost Animation 'Intermezzo 23' Recovered in New Book

publication · 2026-04-27

A newly published book by Jonathan Giustini, 'Intermezzo 23', reconstructs the only surviving complete animation by Italian artist Pino Pascali, created in 1966. The 30-second film, featuring characters called the 'Posteros' (invented with Sandro Lodolo), was rediscovered and restored with contributions from scholars including Daniela Ferraria, Marco Giusti, Anna D'Elia, Bruno di Marino, Roberto La Carbonara, Simonetta Lux, and Luca Maria Patella. The animation, originally intended for television but never broadcast, includes preparatory drawings, pastel notes, and acetate cels. The book includes a QR code to view the restored animation, realized by Marco Schiavoni. The project also involved tracking down the original cameraman who filmed the cels, with help from Claudia Lodolo and the Archivio per l'Opera grafica di Pascali. The book is published by NFC editore and will be presented on September 23, 2023 at the Fondazione Pino Pascali in Polignano a Mare. Pascali, known for his sculpture, photography, and performance, used commercial animation work to support himself while experimenting with the medium.
