Pino Boresta Reflects on Art Symposium at Galleria Nazionale di Roma

opinion-review · 2026-04-26

On May 27, 2024, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome hosted The Art Symposium, organized by Guido Talarico, director and founder of InsideArt, and the museum’s new director Cristina Mazzantini. The event featured a series of panels from morning to afternoon. Artist Pino Boresta attended the afternoon sessions on Digital Revolution and Collecting & Market. He noted that he appeared to be the only artist present. During the Digital Revolution panel, Alberto Gambino highlighted the excessive value attributed to AI-generated responses, citing a real incident. In the Collecting & Market panel, collector Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, responding to moderator Angelo Crespi, emphasized that she buys artworks based on personal passion rather than as financial investments like stocks or bonds. Boresta, who has written extensively on these topics, reiterated his view that artists often serve as tools for capital circulation, with their works functioning as a kind of currency. He questioned whether the art system has been invented to guarantee value in a world of quantitative easing, and referenced Lucio Fontana's statement that art's role in social, moral, and spiritual values is null, but that artists maintain the reason for being human.
