Pinault Collection Opens at Bourse de Commerce with Surprising First Exhibition
The Pinault Collection has finally opened its new Parisian space at the Bourse de Commerce, designed by Tadao Ando, after multiple pandemic-related delays. The inaugural exhibition, 'Ouverture,' curated by François Pinault and his team (Jean-Jacques Aillagon, Martin Bethenod, Caroline Bourgeois, Matthieu Humery), deliberately avoids the collector's known preferences for minimal art, media-friendly figures like Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, and West Coast artists like Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley. Instead, it presents a restrained, sober hang featuring mostly unseen works. Highlights include Urs Fischer's wax sculpture installation in the rotunda, a room dedicated to David Hammons (rarely shown in France), a photography section with works by Michel Journiac, Cindy Sherman, Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince, Martha Wilson, and Louise Lawler, and extensive figurative painting by Kerry James Marshall, Rudolf Stingel, Martin Kippenberger, Thomas Schütte, Florian Krewer, Miriam Cahn, and Marlene Dumas. Installations by Pierre Huyghe and Tarek Atoui are in the basement. The exhibition runs until December 31, 2021.
