Pinacoteca di Brera Launches Ultra-High-Resolution Online Viewing

digital · 2026-04-27

During the COVID-19 lockdown, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan has launched a new digital initiative allowing the public to explore its collection in extreme detail. In collaboration with Haltadefinizione, a tech company specializing in cultural heritage digitization, the museum has created a special section on its website featuring Gigapixel images of masterpieces such as Raphael's 'The Marriage of the Virgin', Hayez's 'The Kiss', and Correggio's 'Adoration of the Magi'. The images, captured using specialized cameras that take hundreds or thousands of macro photographs stitched together like a mosaic, enable viewers to zoom in up to 40x, revealing details invisible to the naked eye. James Bradburne, director of the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Biblioteca Braidense, stated that making Raphael's masterpiece accessible in high resolution during a time when no one can see it in person is a perfect expression of the power of art and the museum's values. Luca Ponzio, founder of Haltadefinizione, emphasized that Gigapixel images offer extraordinary opportunities for digital and immersive access to museum collections, opening new creative possibilities for valorization, conservation, and study.
