digital · 2026-04-27

A film titled Dancing at Dusk – A moment with Pina Bausch's The Rite of Spring captures a performance of the iconic choreographer's work on a beach in Senegal. The performance was staged by 38 dancers from 14 African countries, originally intended for a world tour in spring 2020 co-produced by Sadler's Wells (UK), Pina Bausch Foundation (Germany), and École des Sables (Senegal). The tour was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the company held a final rehearsal on the beach near École des Sables before lockdown. The film, directed by Florian Heinzen-Ziob, is available on demand for a £5 contribution until July 31, 2020. Proceeds support the company and future production. Pina Bausch's original version of The Rite of Spring premiered in 1975, featuring 30 dancers on a stage covered in earth, and became a landmark in dance history.
