Pilvi Takala to Represent Finland at 2021 Venice Biennale

Pilvi Takala, a video and performance artist based between Berlin and Helsinki, has been selected to represent Finland at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2021. Her work will be presented in the Alvar Aalto-designed Finland Pavilion at the Giardini. The exhibition is commissioned and produced by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and curated by Christina Li. Takala's practice involves performative interventions that examine social structures and behavioral norms. Her works have been exhibited at MoMA PS1, New Museum, Palais de Tokyo, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Kunsthalle Basel, Manifesta 11, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the 9th Istanbul Biennial. Frame's director Raija Koli expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Takala, noting her unique vision. The announcement is part of a series of national participations for the 2021 Biennale, with other countries including New Zealand (Yuki Kihara), Australia (Marco Fusinato), Canada (Stan Douglas), Switzerland (Latifa Echakhch), and France (Zineb Sedira). Additionally, Cecilia Alemani was appointed Director of the Visual Arts Sector and Roberto Cicutto was elected President of the Venice Biennale.
