Pilar Corrias Opens New Mayfair Gallery in London
Pilar Corrias is opening a new flagship gallery in London's Mayfair district at 51 Conduit Street, expanding her presence in the city 15 years after founding her first gallery in 2008. The nearly 500-square-meter space across two floors will be designed by Cowie Montgomery Architects following a complete renovation. It will feature a main exhibition space and a ground-floor gallery with ceilings over five meters, alongside a library, private viewing room, and offices. The new venue will replace the Eastcastle Street location and complement the existing Savile Row space, enabling simultaneous programming. The inaugural exhibition, coinciding with Frieze London from October 10 to December 22, 2023, will present new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Christina Quarles—her fourth show with the gallery. Concurrently, Savile Row will host a show by Shanghai artist Cui Jie, and at Frieze London the gallery will present a solo booth of works by Sophie von Hellermann. In an interview, Corrias noted that two-thirds of her 35 represented artists are women, calling this an anomaly in the industry. She cited the Burns-Halperin report indicating that at current growth rates, auction market parity for women artists will not be seen until 2053. Corrias emphasized that her gallery's focus on sociopolitical issues such as ethnicity, gender, sexuality, technology, and colonialism is central to her artists' practices.
