Pieve Aldina: A New Luxury Hotel in Chianti Blends Ancient and Contemporary Design

Pierattelli Architecture has completed the restoration and renovation of Pieve Aldina, a new five-star hotel in Chianti, part of the Relais & Chateaux network. Located near the medieval village of Radda in Chianti, the hotel occupies three historic buildings—Pieve, Studiolo, and Conventino—adjacent to a 10th-century church. The property, originally known as Pieve di Santa Maria Novella, was gifted to Aldina Ubaldini in 1043 by her husband, the Count of Piancaldoli, and later served as the summer residence of the Bishop of Siena. Its conversion into a hotel was spearheaded by Frédéric Biousse and Guillaume Foucher, founders of Les Domaines de Fontenille. The 22 rooms range from 40 to 90 square meters, blending antique and modern elements, with lighting by Flos, furnishings by Gervasoni, and Simmons mattresses set against traditional terracotta floors and lime walls. The hotel also features a spa with hill views, an outdoor pool, and the restaurant Le Rondini, led by chef Flavio Faedi, who offers contemporary cuisine rooted in local traditions, including pappa al pomodoro and fresh pasta-making classes. The project was led by Massimo Pierattelli and his sons Andrea and Claudio, aiming to synthesize a contemporary Tuscan aesthetic.
