Pietro Aretino e l'arte nel Rinascimento: mostra agli Uffizi
A 2019 exhibition at the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence explores the life and work of Pietro Aretino (1492–1556), a poet, art critic, and libertine intellectual of the Italian Renaissance. The show reconstructs his personality through literary works, paintings, sculptures, medals, and Renaissance furnishings, tracing his journey through Arezzo, Florence, Perugia, Mantua, Rome, and Venice. It highlights Aretino's role as a polemicist and satirist, his licentious writings, and his connections with artists like Titian, who painted his portrait. The exhibition also examines the courtly culture of the time, featuring works by Bronzino, Sebastiano del Piombo, Raphael, Giulio Romano, Lorenzo Lotto, Palladio, Dosio, Sansovino, and Titian. It presents Aretino as a mirror of 16th-century Italy's contradictions—beauty and decadence, virtue and vice—and his anticipation of Caravaggio's world. The show includes rare printed volumes from the 1500s, such as the "Sonetti lussuriosi" (1537). Curated by Niccolò Lucarelli, the exhibition offers a sociological perspective on the Renaissance's political fragmentation and enduring relevance.
