Pietrina Checcacci's Ecofeminist Paintings at Galatea São Paulo

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Pietrina Checcacci's exhibition 'Tactics of the body' at Galatea in São Paulo features 26 works, primarily from 1965 to 1986, exploring the human form as sublime geography. The Italian-born artist, who moved to Brazil in 1954, initially created Pop art under the military dictatorship, depicting groups like intellectuals and activists in flat colors. From the late 1960s, her work shifted toward abstracting the female body, with pieces like 'Carnações' (1982) blurring lines between flesh and landscape. In 'Evaterra' (1971), viewers adopt the perspective of a woman gazing at her own body, with red-nailed fingers near her lips. The show includes paintings hung on pink walls and freestanding racks, with erotic and violent undertones in works such as 'Carne e corda' (1982), where a body is bound in ropes. Checcacci's ecofeminist approach connects body and land as sites of pleasure and pain, influenced by peers like Lygia Pape and Hélio Oiticica. The exhibition runs from 4 June to 13 July.
