award · 2026-04-26

Pietrasanta, a town in Tuscany celebrated for its marble and bronze artistry, is among eight contenders for the title of Capitale italiana dell'arte contemporanea 2027. The decision will be revealed in late October 2025, with the winner receiving €1 million from the Ministry of Culture. The town's proposal, titled 'Essere arte. O dell’umanità dell’arte', was unveiled at a location undergoing urban renewal. This initiative aims to elevate Pietrasanta's status, foster public-private partnerships, support artists, and explore the connection between tradition and innovation in art and well-being. The scientific committee features notable figures such as Franco Broccardi and Alfonso Cuarón. Mayor Alberto Stefano Giovannetti stated that 'Essere arte' embodies art as a lived experience. Other cities in the running include Alba, Chioggia, Foligno, Spoleto, Termoli, Varese, and Gallarate, while Gibellina holds the title for 2026.
