Pietrasanta's New Museum Complex: 967arch's Design for Museo dei Bozzetti

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

A new cultural hub is set to open in Pietrasanta, Italy, centered around the Museo dei Bozzetti. The complex, located on the main square near Palazzo Moroni and the Duomo di San Martino, occupies a former Augustinian monastery built from the 14th century. The project, designed by 967arch (Cesare Chichi and Stefano Maestri), includes a new glass volume for a monographic museum, described as a "luminous lantern" visible from the hill above. The 8,000 sqm facility will house 850 bozzetti (sketches) from the 20th century onward and 400 from the mid-1900s, along with temporary exhibition spaces, offices, storage, a library, and the existing Museo dei Bozzetti founded in 1984 by Jette Muhlendorf. The Church of Sant'Agostino will host exhibitions and conferences; the cloister, convent, and hanging garden will display works on the ground floor. The project includes restoration, adaptive reuse, and a new transparent volume. Estimated cost is €11 million, with projected 30,000 annual visitors through 30 temporary exhibitions and 16 events. The initiative aims to showcase the relationship between art and local craftsmanship, particularly marble working.
