Pierre Seinturier: Drawing Between Reality and Fiction

Pierre Seinturier, born in 1988 in Paris, graduated from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 2010 in the printed image department. His practice blurs the line between drawing and painting, often starting with automatic drawings in notebooks inspired by a mental image bank. He uses various instruments and papers, including glossy restaurant napkins. His works feature scenes from a fantasized 1930s America, with doo-wop lyrics contrasting noirish imagery. He incorporates objects and notebooks into exhibitions, as seen at the 58th Salon de Montrouge, where he won the special jury prize in 2013. His paintings evolve from drawings, initially using colored washes and later craft paper and green paper mounted on wood. Recent works show autonomous painting with white backgrounds and stark chiaroscuro. He cites influences from Edward Hopper, David Hockney, Walker Evans, William Eggleston, Joel Sternfeld, and Peter Doig. His work has been shown at the Musée des Tissus in Lyon, the Palais de Tokyo's Modules hors-les-murs, and Galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois in Paris. A solo exhibition at Galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois in winter 2014 featured new paintings with heightened light and color after a countryside stay.
