Pierre Schaeffer's Creative Legacy Examined in New CNRS Volume

publication · 2026-04-23

A new edited volume by M. Kaltenecker and K. LeBail, published by CNRS éditions, reexamines the work of Pierre Schaeffer, co-inventor of musique concrète. Unlike Pierre Henry, whose electronic music influenced generations, Schaeffer is often seen as a theorist and his musical output remains underexplored. The book avoids pure musicology or biography, instead focusing on Schaeffer's creative activity across his compositions and the institutions he founded, such as the association Jeune France, which served as a laboratory for new cultural forms during the 'Révolution nationale'. Contributions analyze works like 'La Coquille à planètes', a manifesto of 'radiophonic art' that used recording and reproduction technologies as experimental grounds. Schaeffer's music challenges conventional artistic boundaries, raising questions about stage presence and dramaturgy in acousmatic music—where sound sources are invisible—as noted by Esteban Buch. The volume also addresses the collective dimension of music in production and listening.
