Pierre Molinier: Late Consecration Through New Publications and Exhibitions

Four recent publications and upcoming exhibitions in Paris and Bordeaux signal a belated recognition of Pierre Molinier's work. The Bordeaux-born artist, endorsed by André Breton in the 1950s and supported by Alain Jouffroy and Pierre Bourgeade, had long been a cult figure among a small circle. New books by Pierre Petit ("Pierre Molinier et la tentation de l'Orient"), Jacques Abeille ("Pierre Molinier, présence de l'exil"), Henri Maccheroni ("Un après-midi chez Pierre Molinier"), and an album of unpublished writings and drawings edited by Jean-Luc Mercié aim to correct Molinier's misunderstood legacy. Scholars like Jean-Michel Devésa seek to move beyond the romanticized "cursed artist" image. Molinier's work, centered on fetishism, androgyny, sadomasochism, and esotericism, has often provoked censorship and moral backlash, including Breton's own puritanical discomfort with his photographs. The artist's photomontages, particularly his self-portraits as a masked woman, are considered his most daring and introspective. Exhibitions include "Jeux de miroirs" at Bordeaux's Musée des Beaux-Arts from September 22, a show at Galerie Kamel Mennour in Paris from September 2 to October 2, and another at Galerie À l'Enseigne des Oudin from September 21 to November 11.
