Pierre Huyghe's Quantum Immersive Installation at Halle am Berghain

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Pierre Huyghe (Paris, 1962) presents 'Liminals', one of his most ambitious works, at Halle am Berghain in Berlin. Commissioned by LAS Art Foundation and Hartwig Art Foundation, the installation is part of the Sensing Quantum program and runs until March 8. It transforms quantum uncertainty into a sensory experience through a film Huyghe calls a 'modern myth', featuring a faceless humanoid figure that shifts across mutable states in a timeless, spaceless realm. The work explores liminal spaces where multiple states coexist, akin to a quantum system before measurement. Huyghe collaborated with quantum physicist Tommaso Calarco and philosopher Tobias Rees to integrate quantum logic into the creative process. With Forschungszentrum Jülich, the oscillation of matter in the film was simulated on a 100-qubit Pasqal quantum computer and translated into sound design. The result makes abstract quantum properties perceptible, corporeal, and almost tactile. Huyghe describes the film as portraying a non-existent being, a 'landscape of the soul', attempting to reconcile empathy with the impossible.
