Pierre Huyghe's First Major Swiss Retrospective at Fondation Beyeler

Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel has opened the first large-scale retrospective in Switzerland of French artist Pierre Huyghe (born 1962, Paris). The exhibition, curated by Mouna Mekouar and Anne Stenne, presents Huyghe's work as a "place of feeling" rather than a display of market-driven objects. It features recent pieces including the organic space shaped by the breathing work Apnea (2026), the carpet Light Dust (2026) that guides visitors through light and shadow, the video Liminals (2025) blurring boundaries between body and space, the self-generating language piece Idiom (2024–ongoing), and the ambiguous sculpture Adversary (2026). Huyghe draws on Situationist détournement to subvert predefined expressive structures, emphasizing process over fixed meaning. The retrospective follows major exhibitions at François Pinault's venues: Palazzo Grassi–Punta della Dogana in Venice (2024) and Bourse de Commerce in Paris (2023). The show runs during Art Basel's "Holy Week," a peak period for international collectors visiting Basel.
