Pierre Cardin's 70-Year Career Celebrated at The Breakers
The Breakers, the historic Vanderbilt family mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, is hosting a retrospective of Pierre Cardin's 70-year career. The exhibition, titled "70 Years of Innovation," features 90 iconic pieces selected by the 95-year-old designer himself, arranged chronologically from the mid-1950s to the present. More than a traditional exhibition, the layout resembles a fashion show, culminating in a runway presentation of Cardin's latest collection. Cardin, born in Italy in 1922, began his career in haute couture in the mid-1940s working with Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior before founding his own house in 1950. Known for his "space age" or "futuristic" style with geometric forms, he pioneered accessible fashion, designing for Printemps department store in the 1950s and expanding into Asia. He was the first designer to show on Moscow's Red Square in 1991, attracting over 200,000 people. The exhibition runs until January 1, 2018.
