Piero Siena Preis: New Award for South Tyrolean Artists
The first edition of the Premio Piero Siena Preis has named Nicolò Degiorgis, Silvia Hell, and Claudia Corrent as winners. The award, promoted by the Ufficio Cultura della Ripartizione Cultura Italiana of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, aims to valorize artists working in South Tyrol. Named after Piero Siena—painter, author, critic, art historian, manager, runner, and founder/director of Museion—the prize was conceived during the pandemic by Giuliano Vettorato, assessor for Italian culture, to support artists economically and creatively. The winning works will be acquired by MAXXI (Rome) and Museion (Bolzano): MAXXI acquires Degiorgis's first-place work "Mare Vostrum"; Museion acquires Hell's "Voci di Corridoio" (second) and Corrent's "Neanche il futuro purtroppo è più quello di una volta" (third). The jury comprised Bartolomeo Pietromarchi (director MAXXI Arte), Bart van der Heide (director Museion), and Paola Tognon. Van der Heide emphasized strengthening the local art scene and collaboration between institutions. Pietromarchi noted the acquisition represents MAXXI's presence in other territories. The winning and finalist works are on view at Centro Trevi – Trevilab in Bolzano until May 30; the official presentation at MAXXI is on September 30.
