Piero Guccione Retrospective at Museo d'Arte di Mendrisio
The Museo d'Arte di Mendrisio presents 'Piero Guccione. La pittura come il mare', the first posthumous retrospective of the Sicilian painter (1935–2018). Curated by Alessandra Quattordio, the exhibition features 56 works—oils and pastels—from 1970 to 2008, including the seminal 'Le linee del mare e della terra' (1970) and the late pastel 'Il nero e l’azzurro' (2008). Guccione, who left his native Scicli in the 1950s after his father's death, developed his art in Rome, influenced by Guttuso, Scipione, and Mafai. He held his first solo shows at Galleria Il Gabbiano and participated in Venice Biennales. Later, he moved to Punta Corvo on the rocky coast of Modica, then to Quartarella, where he lived until his death. His work explores Mediterranean seascapes, skies, and vegetation, capturing infinite light and silence without human figures, yet evoking a pantheistic presence. The exhibition runs at the Museo d'Arte di Mendrisio.
