Piero Fogliati's 'Fantastic City' on View at Atipografia in Arzignano

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Atipografia in Arzignano, a town near Verona, presents 'La città fantastica,' a solo exhibition dedicated to Piero Fogliati (Canelli, 1930 – Turin, 2016), an Italian artist known for his conceptual and material use of light. This is the first historicized artist show for the venue, organized in collaboration with the Archivio Fogliati. The exhibition is held in a perfectly renovated industrial building in the center of Arzignano, where the works engage in dialogue with the space. The central theme is Fogliati's 'fantastic city' project, initiated in the early 1960s as a response to urbanization and its environmental impact, reflecting the cultural context of Italo Calvino, Olivetti, and urban planning. The show features drawings with a design quality, but the utopia is realized through sculpture and installation. Fogliati, though a solitary researcher, participated in the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1986, the Japanese ARTEC Biennale in Nagoya in 1997, and had a major retrospective at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino in 2003. In 2006, he was invited to FASTER! BIGGER! BETTER! Signet works of the collections at ZKM Karlsruhe. Shadows also play a key role in his work, linking to Eastern culture and pre-cinematic magic lanterns.
