Pier Paolo Perilli's Raw and Playful Paintings at Galleria Eugenia Delfini
Galleria Eugenia Delfini in Rome presents the debut solo exhibition of Italian outsider artist Pier Paolo Perilli (b. 1974, Rome), titled 'Che sia una bugia ma bella' (Let It Be a Lie but Beautiful). The show features numerous works where bare canvases are nailed directly to the wall, with oil paint applied in a scratchy, aggressive manner that contrasts with the soft colors of dreamlike subjects. Perilli's style evokes hardcore music, Abstract Expressionism, and Art Brut. The artist, who dislikes explaining his work, creates hybrid anthropomorphic figures with animal heads (birds, rabbits), bizarre hats, and masks, using recycled fabrics as found objects. His paintings reflect the contradictions of the 1980s, political turmoil of the 1990s, and contemporary anxieties. The exhibition runs through June 2024.
