Pier Luigi Nervi: The Architect Who Turned Concrete into Art

Pier Luigi Nervi (1891–1979) transformed the use of concrete through groundbreaking engineering and prefabrication techniques. He was born in Sondrio and completed his studies at Bologna in 1913. After collaborating with Attilio Muggia, he established his own firms alongside Nebbiosi and Bartoli. In 1943, he introduced ferro-cemento, which facilitated the creation of lightweight, prefabricated panels for expansive structures, significantly lowering costs and construction time. His prominent projects include the Orbetello hangars, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and the facilities for the 1960 Rome Olympics, which were analyzed by Le Corbusier. Although he received eight honorary doctorates, Nervi encountered criticism from architects like Bruno Zevi regarding his classicist symmetry and supposed fascist affiliations. He contributed to Casabella and authored books, asserting that true beauty lies in correct form, a stance differing from Riccardo Morandi's aesthetic principles. His contributions to Italian engineering are currently being reassessed.
