Piemonte elections: who will be the new culture councillor?

other · 2026-05-04

Following the recent regional elections in Piemonte, Alberto Cirio (center-right) won with over 49% of the vote, defeating incumbent Sergio Chiamparino (center-left) who received under 36%. Cirio, born in Turin in 1972 but from Alba, previously served as assessor for Tourism, Education and Sport under governor Roberto Cota. He has not yet announced his cabinet. The leading candidate for culture councillor is Mario Turetta, a sociologist, journalist, and Mibac executive who directed La Venaria Reale from 2015 to 2018, then the Residenze Reali Sabaude, and since March 2019 has been director general of Cinema at the Ministry. Turetta reportedly had strained relations with outgoing culture councillor Antonella Parigi. Other contenders include art critic and curator Luca Beatrice, a professor at Accademia Albertina di Torino who has worked with Parigi and has ties to center-right politicians, and artist and advertiser Ugo Nespolo, former president of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema from 2011 to 2014.
