Piccolomini Spannocchi Collection Reunited at Santa Maria della Scala
After 186 years, the Piccolomini Spannocchi Collection, donated to the Civic Community of Siena in 1835, has found a permanent home at the Santa Maria della Scala complex. This collection features 165 artworks, excluding Domenico Beccafumi's cartoons for the Duomo floor, which are still housed at the Pinacoteca. Its lineage traces back to the Gonzaga family of Mantua, linked by the 1774 union of Caterina Piccolomini and Giuseppe Spannocchi. The exhibition was curated by an all-female team in collaboration with various institutions. A preview was conducted two years prior, and the current display is set in a major temporary exhibition area, with future restoration plans underway. A catalog edited by Pacini features insights from 30 scholars.
