Picasso Show in Rome Bans Reviews Due to Strict Copyright

opinion-review · 2026-04-27

The Galleria Nazionale di Roma has opened a major exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's death, titled "Picasso metamorfico," curated by Fernando Castro Flórez. The show features 300 works on paper—drawings and prints—on loan from the Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Malaga, running until November 5, 2023. However, the exhibition has sparked controversy because the Spanish institution, through the Italian copyright agency SIAE, has imposed such restrictive image rights that publishers cannot afford to reproduce any artwork photos. Even installation shots are deliberately blurred to make works unrecognizable. As a result, media outlets are effectively prevented from publishing reviews, since online platforms like Google and Facebook deprioritize articles without rich imagery. The curator called Picasso a "metamorphic artist" who modulated his obsessions. The article notes that this copyright enforcement paradoxically harms the artist's legacy by hindering dissemination. The exhibition spans works from 1905 to 1972, including the Suite Vollard series, and addresses themes like the artist-model relationship and dialogues with art history masters such as Raphael, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Degas, and Manet. The piece criticizes the absurdity of a system that, while protecting artists, ends up damaging their celebration.
