Picasso's Multifaceted Art Explored in Aosta Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo Archeologico Regionale di Aosta presents 'L’altro Picasso. Ritorno alle origini', an immersive exhibition curated by Helena Alonso, J. Óscar Carrascosa, and Daria Jorioz. The show opens with a 1878 painting by Picasso's father, José Ruiz y Blasco, depicting a sparrow and a dove. It explores Picasso's wide-ranging practice, including costume and set designs for a ballet by Manuel de Falla, based on a libretto by Gregorio Martínez Sierra from a novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, commissioned by Sergej Diaghilev. These drawings, created during the 'return to order' period, debuted at London's Alhambra Theatre in 1919 and in Paris in 1920. The exhibition also features numerous engravings referencing bullfighting and classical themes, as well as ceramics like plates, vases, masks, and jugs in red-figure style on black ground. Concurrently, the Centro Saint Bénin in Aosta hosts 'Brassaï: L’occhio di Parigi', curated by Philippe Ribeyrolles, showcasing photographs by Brassaï, a friend and portraitist of Picasso.
