Picasso's Guernica genesis explored in MAN Nuoro exhibition and animated short

exhibition · 2026-04-27

At the MAN – Museo d’arte della Provincia di Nuoro, the exhibition 'Picasso e Guernica. Genesi di un capolavoro. Contro tutte le guerre' runs until February 19, 2023. Curated by Michele Tavola, it marks the 70th anniversary of Guernica's first Italian showing in 1953 at Milan's Palazzo Reale, Sala delle Cariatidi, and the 20th anniversary of Picasso's first exhibition at MAN (featuring the Suite Vollard etchings). The show includes prints, sketches, and Dora Maar's photographs documenting the painting's creation. To underscore the work's ongoing relevance amid global conflicts, artist Manuelle Mureddu created an animated short titled 'Gernika' in black and white, with illustrator Luca Tuveri and music by Simone Mura. The film narrates Guernica's genesis in three chapters: the bombing of the Spanish town, Picasso's internalization of the news, and his translation of despair onto canvas.
