Picasso Museum Paris to Expand with New Wing and Public Sculpture Park by 2030

institutional · 2026-04-26

On its 40th anniversary, the Musée Picasso in Paris announces a major expansion project called Picasso 2030, costing over €50 million. The museum, which opened on September 28, 1985, in the historic Hôtel Salé, will gain a new wing for temporary exhibitions, doubling its current 400 square meters to 800 square meters. The expansion also includes a public park connecting the museum garden to Place Leonor Fini, featuring a dozen bronze animal sculptures by Picasso, including the 1950 Goat. This will be the first public space in Paris enhanced by Picasso's art. The project is funded by the museum, a significant donation from the Picasso family, and private sponsors. Construction begins in 2028 and lasts two years without closing the museum. The expansion, championed by museum president Cécile Debray, also includes a new café, bookshop, and educational spaces. The museum currently holds over 3,000 Picasso works and opened a research center, the Centre d'Études Picasso, about a year ago in the Hôtel de Rohan.
