Picasso and Calder in Dialogue at Museo Picasso Málaga

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The exhibition 'Calder-Picasso' has opened at the Museo Picasso Málaga, exploring the artistic affinities between Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) and Alexander Calder (Lawnton, 1898 – New York, 1976). Both artists focused on space and movement: Calder through subtraction of mass in his mobiles, and Picasso through fragmentation of time and space, emphasizing interiority. Despite their shared interests, they met only a few times—first in 1931 at Calder's show at Galerie Percier in Paris, where Picasso visited him, and again in July 1937 at the Spanish Pavilion of the Exposition Internationale in Paris, where Calder's 'Fontaine de Mercure' and Picasso's 'Guernica' were displayed. Their works were also shown together at the São Paulo Biennial in 1953. The exhibition previously ran at the Musée national Picasso in Paris until August 2019. In Málaga, around 100 works are on view until February 2, 2020.
