Piazzale Loreto in Milan to Become a Green Agora by 2025
By 2025, Piazzale Loreto in Milan is set to become a sustainable and pedestrian-friendly green area, just in time for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The project, known as the LOC – Loreto open community, is spearheaded by Ceetrus Nhood and partners, having triumphed in the Reinventing Cities competition. The revamped piazza will feature a green agora, pathways for cyclists and pedestrians, water elements, and electric vehicle charging stations. While traffic will be rerouted to ensure connectivity, the focus will be on promoting walking and cycling. Around 300 trees will be planted, and green roofs will help lower heat islands by 6-7°C. Construction will commence in October 2023 and is expected to conclude by February 2026. Mayor Giuseppe Sala described it as an "epochal urban transformation," with an anticipated SROI of 4:1 and an investment exceeding €60 million.
