Piazza Municipio in Naples: A 20-Year Transformation Nears Completion
Piazza Municipio in Naples, designed by Portuguese architects Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, has undergone over two decades of construction for the Municipio metro station. The station, which opened for Line 1 in June 2015, will see its interchange with Line 6 completed in 2024, extending to Fuorigrotta. The project required 27 modifications due to significant archaeological finds from Roman to 19th-century periods, including a 16th-century tower base and some 3,000 artifacts such as amphorae and ship remains. An archaeological park adjacent to Castel Nuovo is nearing completion, featuring remnants of the ancient Greek-Roman port of Neapolis, thermal baths, and a 14th-century Angevin structure. The piazza was freed from construction barriers in April 2022, sparking criticism over reduced greenery and lack of shade. The minimalist design uses lava stone, white plaster, and brick, aiming to minimize impact on historic landmarks like Castel Nuovo, Palazzo Reale, and the Royal Palace, while framing views of Vesuvius. Historical transformations include the 1925-30 isolation of Castel Nuovo by archaeologists Antonio Muñoz and Corrado Ricci, the 1936 construction of the maritime station by Cesare Bazzani, and the 1956 removal of centuries-old elm trees by mayor Achille Lauro for public safety. The Neptune Fountain (1601) by Michelangelo Naccherino, Angelo Landi, Pietro Bernini, and Cosimo Fanzago was relocated to the piazza in the late 2000s.
