PIAZZA Fremantle: A New Arts Precinct Model Supporting Emerging Artists

PIAZZA, a privately funded arts precinct in Fremantle/Walyalup, Western Australia, is redefining arts funding through a unique business model. Founder Bronwyn Owen, a Western Australian-born, New York-based businesswoman, purchased the 2800-square-metre buildings for $12.5 million in September 2025, transforming derelict courtyards into a thriving hub of arts, food, and culture. The precinct operates on a co-op model where street-facing commercial tenants subsidize internal art studios and exhibition spaces. Since its soft launch in December 2025, PIAZZA has hosted exhibitions, supported emerging artists with peppercorn gallery fees ($200 for two weeks), and provided mentorship through coordinator Sam Bloor. The precinct has commissioned five large-scale murals, including works by French artist AERO and local artist Adam Cicanese, and plans a mural festival, PIAZZA Walls, from 27 November to 13 December 2026, in collaboration with Jerome Davenport. Future projects include a Children's Art Museum and intimate performances like opera and jazz. Owen emphasizes building partnerships to incubate new talent, with local community support deemed vital. The precinct aims to offer artists a percentage of profits from arts activities, creating a sustainable model that could serve as a blueprint for other entrepreneurs.
