artist · 2026-04-24

Phyllida Barlow, the renowned British sculptor celebrated for her large-scale creations crafted from common materials, has passed away. She rose to international fame later in her life following her retirement after a 40-year tenure at the Slade School of Art. A pivotal solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 2010 propelled her into the spotlight. In 2017, Barlow represented the UK at the Venice Biennale. She characterized her expansive sculptures as navigational challenges, employing lightweight, disposable materials to satirize traditional notions of monumentality. Barlow studied at Chelsea College of Art and the Slade, where she also taught. She became a Royal Academician in 2011, joined Hauser & Wirth that same year, and was honored as CBE in 2015 and Dame Commander in 2021.
