Photoquai and Surrealist Photography: Two Paris Exhibitions Challenge the Gaze

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In Paris, two significant photography exhibitions, Photoquai at the Musée du quai Branly and La Subversion des images at the Centre Pompidou, sought to shift how audiences perceive art. Curated by Anahita Ghabaian Etehadieh, Photoquai highlighted 165 years of Iranian photography, featuring 50 images from 32 nations that tackled social issues. Prominent artists included Lu Guang, Mohamad Iqbal, Daniela Edburg, Gohar Dashti, Santiago Porter, and Karen Mirzoyan, while identity was a focus for Mouna Karray, Arthur Renwick, and Abbas Kowsari. La Subversion des images showcased surrealist photography from the 1920s and 30s, presenting over 350 works by Man Ray, Hans Bellmer, and others. Photoquai was open from September 22 to November 22, 2009, and La Subversion des images from September 23, 2009, to January 11, 2010.
