Photography Preservation Challenges in the Digital Age
In the November 2008 issue of art press n°350, Anne Cartier-Bresson examines the difficulties faced in the conservation of photographs over the last fifteen years, largely due to advancements in technology and evolving artistic methods. The prevalence of both analog and digital images necessitates that restorers are well-versed in various materials. Identification challenges arise with monochrome photographs from the 20th century; to combat this, the Getty Conservation Institute's Barytome Project seeks to verify baryta prints, protecting against forgeries of artists such as Lewis Hine and Man Ray. Ongoing research on Henri Cartier-Bresson's prints is also highlighted. Since the 1990s, color photography conservation issues have surfaced.
