Photography and Its Echoes: Four Exhibitions in Paris

A review in artpress examines four photography exhibitions in Paris from late 2005 to early 2006, focusing on the interplay between photography and three-dimensional objects. Pascal Colrat and Arik Levy presented a joint show at Passage de Retz (November 16, 2005 – January 9, 2006), exploring intimacy and universal emotions through photographs and fabricated objects. Colrat investigated his grandfather's murder in Aveyron, using collected objects and staged scenes blending tragedy and comedy. Levy, a designer turned artist, displayed works like Love (2004), a metal and fabric seat with visible stitching, and Rocks (2004), a stainless steel and mirror table. At Galerie Gilles Peyroulet et Cie (December 1, 2005 – January 28, 2006), Robin Collyer's Idioms of Resistance featured minimalist sculptures and unframed photographs critiquing American culture and media, including Circus, an aluminum and wood sculpture referencing the first Gulf War. At Galerie Anne Barrault (October 29 – December 23, 2005), Philippe Bazin's Détenus presented black-and-white close-up portraits of prisoners from Bois D'Arcy, Villepinte, Fresnes, and Fleury-Mérogis, accompanied by video monitors showing prison surroundings and a seascape, Uist Island (2002).
