Photographers Rogério Assis and Ciro Girard launch environmental book 'Mato?' confronting Amazon destruction

publication · 2026-04-23

'Mato?', a new publication focused on the environmental degradation of the Amazon, was introduced by photographer Rogério Assis and art director Ciro Girard. Released by Editora Olhavé, the book showcases 58 images arranged in 29 diptychs, contrasting themes of conservation and destruction. Assis, a native of Belém and a collaborator with Greenpeace, emphasizes the project's environmental significance, critiquing the emphasis on authorship rather than the issues at hand. The initiative, backed by five sponsors, originated two years ago and follows their previous work, 'Zo’é', released in 2013 by Terceiro Nome. This hardcover edition spans 116 pages, with a limited print run of 500 copies priced at R$90, available at loja.olhave.com.br. Assis has been a photographer since the 1980s and was the first to document the Zo’é people in 2013.
