Photographers Document African Wildlife from Underground Hides in Kenya

Husband-and-wife photographers Mark and Jaren Fernley spent two months at Shompole Conservancy in Kenya, capturing close-up images of lions, leopards, and other animals from two specialized hides. They used Shompole Plains Hide, an underground structure at eye level with a waterhole, and Shompole Kichaka Hide, a more enclosed space for elusive species. The experience allowed them to observe animal behavior patterns, such as timing of visits and reactions to moonlight. They employed Canon R5 Mark II cameras with RF 24-105mm f/2.8, RF 70-200mm f/2.8, and 300mm lenses. Solar-powered lighting with dimmer switches provided illumination without startling animals. The Fernleys gathered knowledge for their safari company, Untamed Photo Safaris, which offers photography-focused expeditions. They emphasize patience and respect, noting that hides allow animals to approach naturally, unlike traditional vehicle-based safaris. The conservancy also features modest accommodation within the hides, including beds and toilet facilities.
