Photographer Marcello Gianvenuti dies at 76

Photographer Marcello Gianvenuti died on August 4, 2020 in Rome at age 76. He collaborated with leading Italian artists from the 1960s onward, notably Mario Schifano for over thirty years. Gianvenuti began his career in the early 1960s working with Renato Gozzano, Ugo Mulas, and Elisabetta Catalano. He documented artists including Franco Angeli, Tano Festa, Maurizio Mochetti, and Franco Sarnari. In the 1980s, he opened a studio with Mimmo Capone that later became Ugo Ferranti's gallery near the Museo Napoleonico, working with Ceccobelli, Dessì, Nunzio, Gallo, Tirelli, Sol LeWitt, and Cy Twombly. He also collaborated with graphic designer Alfredo De Santis on television animations and undertook photographic documentation for UNICEF, UNHCR, and Crocevia in Africa. His funeral was held at 11:00 on August 6 at the parish of Piazza Santa Maria alle Fornaci in Rome. He is survived by his children Claudia, in electronic music, and Alessandro, in contemporary art, photography, and graphics.
