Photographer John Barnard launches Tether Studio, a $99 one-time purchase tethering app

Commercial photographer and retoucher John Barnard, who has worked on campaigns for Nike, Apple, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn, has released Tether Studio, a macOS tethering and studio workflow tool. The app was born from Barnard's frustration with subscription-based software ecosystems, particularly after a broken tethering connection on set with his Canon 5D Mark IV. Tether Studio combines camera connectivity, AI-assisted culling (analyzing focus, exposure, and duplicates locally), and on-set review tools into a single application. It supports over 2,900 cameras from Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Leica, Hasselblad, and Phase One, and runs entirely offline after activation. The software includes Smart Cull AI, Art Director Mode for live annotations, and client review features. Barnard criticized Capture One's shift to subscription pricing following private equity ownership changes, describing a pattern of forcing perpetual users to subscription and then removing perpetual options. Tether Studio is available as a one-time purchase of $99 with no recurring fees, no account required, and a 7-day free trial. Barnard emphasizes he built the app from his own on-set experience, not a corporate roadmap, and aims to give photographers ownership of their tools.
