Photographer Emiliano Mancuso dies at 47
Emiliano Mancuso, a photographer and videomember of Contrasto Agency, died on September 26 at age 47. Born in Rome in 1971, he collaborated with National Geographic, The New York Times, The Guardian, Time, and L'Espresso. In 2009 he joined Contrasto. He taught photo and video reportage at the Experimental Cinematography Center (National Film School) and directed the Master in Contemporary Photojournalism at Officine Fotografiche Roma. His work focused on Italy and Italians, documenting social and economic crises, current events, and politics. His 2011 photobook "Stato d'Italia" emerged from a four-year journey covering the Rosarno revolt of African farmworkers, Taranto youth resisting Ilva steelworks, Rome housing struggles, Calabrian farmers, and youth in Rome's public housing. His 2014 video "Il Diario di Felix" documented the Casa Felix community for minors on Rome's periphery. The 2018 video "Le cicale," co-made with Federico Romano and produced by Zona, portrayed pensioners struggling to survive. Contrasto released a statement mourning his loss, and friends and colleagues expressed condolences on social media.
