artist · 2026-04-27

Alessandro Cimmino (1969–2022), a Neapolitan photographer, has died at 53. He studied architecture and was mentored by Mimmo Jodice and Vincenzo Castella. Working in Stefano Boeri's studio, he met his wife Alessandra from Levanto, which became his spiritual home. His series "Mare Alto" captures the Ligurian coast with a conceptual, anti-baroque gaze. "May Day" documents Naples at night during social tensions, obscuring windows to convey a city asleep. In 2013, he participated in "Architettura e reti del petrolio e del post-petrolio" at MAXXI Rome with photographs of gas stations inspired by Ed Ruscha's "Twenty Six Gasoline Stations." His project "1182" documents the collapsed Polcevera viaduct (Morandi Bridge) in Genoa, named after its length in meters. With permission from the Genoa prosecutor's office in December 2019, he entered the judicial evidence depot. He also explored Portofino mountain tracing the pirate Dragut's path. Cimmino's work is influenced by Hilla and Bernd Becher's industrial photography.
