Photo London 2017: 89 Galleries from 16 Nations at Somerset House

The third edition of Photo London took place at Somerset House, featuring 89 galleries from 16 countries. The fair aimed to establish itself as a must-attend event for photography enthusiasts, building on the previous edition's success in reviving London as a global photography hub. Curated by Philippe Garner, former head of Christie's photography department, the fair presented rare historical treasures, new works by established masters, and emerging talents. For the first time, art consultant Tristan Lund curated a special section for a select group of new galleries. The event extended across London, involving major institutions such as Tate Britain, Tate Modern, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Natural History Museum. Tate Modern extended its exhibition of Elton John's photography collection. The Italian Cultural Institute in London, directed by photographer Marco Delogu, was a key partner, hosting a month of photography events and dedicating a special space to Delogu's 'Equestrian Studies' series. Eight Italian galleries participated: Galleria del Cembalo (Rome), Galleria Valeria Bella (Milan), ILEX Gallery (Rome), Louise Alexander Gallery (Porto Cervo), Officine dell'Immagine (Milan), Paci Contemporary (Brescia and Porto Cervo), and in the Discovery section for young galleries, Matèria (Rome) and Raffaella De Chirico Contemporary Art (Turin). The Italian Ambassador to the UK, Pasquale Terraciano, visited the Italian galleries during the preview.
