Photo&Food: Magnum Photographers Explore Our Relationship with Food in Verona

The exhibition 'Photo&Food. Il cibo nelle fotografie Magnum dagli anni Quaranta a oggi' opens at Eataly Art House – E.ART.H. in Verona, housed in the former Stazione Frigorifera Specializzata, a historic icehouse built in 1930 and renovated by architect Mario Botta. Curated by Walter Guadagnini with Costanza Vilizzi, the show presents 125 photographs by 29 Magnum photographers, spanning from the 1940s to today. The exhibition is divided into five sections: 'Dalla guerra al Boom' captures post-war Europe where food was scarce, featuring Werner Bischof's image of a child in a Swiss refugee camp; 'Il cibo delle star' depicts celebrities like Marilyn Monroe eating a burger (by Philippe Halsman) and Queen Elizabeth II's official lunch (by Martin Parr); 'Dal produttore al consumatore' explores food production and consumption across cultures, from Palermo to China; 'Cibo estremo' addresses modern food frontiers like hydroponics and GMOs; and 'La tavola sacra' examines the ritual and symbolic role of food in religion, with works by Raghu Rai and Ferdinando Scianna. The venue, Eataly Verona, features a 24-meter-diameter concrete dome and includes a market, restaurants, conference rooms, and a museum.
