Phoebe Hui's 'The Moon is Leaving Us' at Tai Kwun
Hong Kong artist Phoebe Hui has unveiled 'The Moon is Leaving Us' for the fifth Audemars Piguet Art Commission, a significant installation that delves into humanity's connection with the Moon. Curated by Ying Kwok, the newly appointed senior curator (digital and heritage) at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, this marks the brand's inaugural exhibition in Asia. The inspiration for Hui's work came from a stroll in Switzerland, reflecting on the Moon's slow departure from Earth. The installation features two components: 'Selenite', a robot with 48 screens showcasing lunar crater images through rotating polariser filters, and 'Selena', a drawing machine that creates Moon illustrations from NASA open-source data and 17th-century depictions. Hui's collaboration included scientists and astronauts, linking lunar studies to figures like Galileo and Johannes Hevelius. The exhibition is open at Tai Kwun until 23 May.
