Philosopher Richard Wollheim's Legacy in Art and Aesthetics

On 4 November 2003, Richard Wollheim, the renowned British philosopher, passed away at his residence in London. He was born in May 1923 and received his education at Westminster School and Balliol College, Oxford. Following his tenure as a Captain in the British Army and subsequent capture in France, Wollheim taught at University College London until 1982, before moving to Columbia University and UC Berkeley. His notable publications include A Family Romance (1969), Art and Its Objects (1969), and Painting as an Art (1987), with his last work being On the Emotions (1999). Wollheim highlighted psychoanalytic perspectives on art, asserting that artistic experience entails intricate perception and dismissing conventionalist views. In 1965, he introduced the term 'minimal art content,' making significant contributions to Minimalism.
