Philosopher of her own Ruin: Alan Longino's Final Curatorial Act at Bonner Kunstverein
Curated by the late Alan Longino (1987–2024), 'Philosopher of her own Ruin' at Bonner Kunstverein reduces the gallery space to reflect his own bodily limitations from cancer. The exhibition explores bodily erasure and transformation through nine artists, including Sydney Schrader (b. 1987), Bertram Schmiterlöw (1920–2002), Rosemarie Castoro (1939–2015), Anna Bella Geiger, Miyako Ishiuchi, and Susan Hiller. The title borrows from Canadian poet Lisa Robertson's essay on menopausal women as 'dandies' detached from reproductive economy. Longino draws parallels between menopausal and sick bodies, finding freedom in detachment from societal utility. Pale grey walls and soft lighting create intimacy. Castoro's steel silhouette 'Sarcophagus Self-Portrait' (1994) contrasts with Schrader's 'Untitled' series (2025) and Schmiterlöw's 'Sömnen' (c. 2000). Geiger's film 'Passagens 1' (1974) was shot under Brazilian dictatorship. Ishiuchi's 'Mother's #54' (2002) documents her late mother's lipstick. Hiller's 'Painting Block' works (1980) transform erased canvases. Longino's research included Yutaka Matsuzawa's 'Quantum Art Manifesto' (1988). The show runs through 27 July 2025.
