Philong Sovan's 'In the City by Night' at Galerie Lee

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Cambodian photographer Philong Sovan (born 1986) presents 'In the City by Night' at Galerie Lee in Paris from April 26 to May 19, 2018. The series, produced since 2010 in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, captures nightlife in cities lacking public lighting. Sovan uses his motorcycle headlamp as a light source, staging scenes with local protagonists who re-enact natural gestures, resulting in images that appear candid but are carefully composed. The work emphasizes theatricality and mystery, highlighting social realities rather than romanticizing poverty. The exhibition was curated by Christian Caujolle. Sovan previously gained attention for his 2013 series documenting the construction site of La Samaritaine through dirty windows.
